La description
The Costa de Almería is much more diverse than it may appear, even to those who already know the province well. Along its coastline, you will find towns with year-round amenities, Mediterranean villages, residential developments and some of the most distinctive natural landscapes in south-eastern Spain. This variety makes it possible to choose between very different lifestyles without moving far from the sea.
Almería city, Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar offer a more urban and practical way of life, with shops, restaurants, amenities and long promenades along the Mediterranean. Almerimar has a particularly residential atmosphere centred around its marina, golf and outdoor activities, an appealing combination for those looking for peace and quiet without feeling isolated.
Further east, the character changes. The Levante Almeriense, including Mojácar, Garrucha, Vera, Villaricos and San Juan de los Terreros, combines distinctive towns and villages, residential areas and a significant international community. The relatively short distances also make it easy to enjoy the amenities and atmosphere of several different locations as part of everyday life.
Cabo de Gata and Almería's more natural side
The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park probably represents the most distinctive side of the Costa de Almería. Its volcanic landscapes, coves, cliffs and small villages create an environment far removed from the large tourist resorts found elsewhere along the Mediterranean, making it particularly appealing to those who prioritise nature, tranquillity and outdoor activities.
San José is one of the areas with the widest range of amenities, while La Isleta del Moro, Las Negras, Rodalquilar and Agua Amarga retain a much quieter atmosphere. Living here or spending longer periods in the area generally means relying somewhat more on a car, but it also makes it possible to incorporate activities such as hiking, kayaking and diving into everyday life, or simply enjoy some of the least developed stretches of coastline.
Carboneras in some ways marks the transition between Cabo de Gata and the Levante Almeriense. It is a coastal town with a life of its own, offering both everyday amenities and access to some of the best-known natural landscapes in this part of the province.
Mojácar, Vera and Garrucha: the heart of the Levante Almeriense
Mojácar remains one of Almería's best-known destinations among international visitors, but living here means discovering much more than its whitewashed village and beaches. Mojácar Pueblo and Mojácar Playa offer very different atmospheres, from traditional streets and viewpoints to coastal areas with restaurants, amenities and activity throughout much of the year.
Nearby, Garrucha retains a strong seafaring identity, with its harbour, seafront promenade and cuisine particularly centred around fish and seafood. Vera, meanwhile, combines a traditional town centre with Vera Playa, where residential developments and a lifestyle focused much more on the Mediterranean predominate.
In practice, Mojácar, Garrucha and Vera function almost as a single residential area. It is common to travel between them to do the shopping, go out for a meal, head to the beach or access different services. For anyone considering a second home or planning to spend several months a year in Spain, this combination can be particularly convenient.
Living on the Costa de Almería all year round
One of the main differences between visiting Almería and considering living here is experiencing the area outside the summer season. Almería city and towns such as Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, Vera and Garrucha maintain a steady level of activity throughout the year, while other smaller coastal areas can be considerably quieter during the winter months.
The climate makes it possible to enjoy an outdoor-oriented lifestyle for much of the year. Walking by the sea, playing golf, cycling or hiking, enjoying terraces or exploring the inland areas of the province are all part of a lifestyle that is difficult to limit to the holiday season alone.
That is why choosing where to live on the Costa de Almería is less about finding the most beautiful beach and more about deciding what kind of lifestyle you are looking for. From the urban convenience of Almería or Roquetas to the natural surroundings of Cabo de Gata or the international atmosphere of Mojácar and Vera, each area offers a different way to enjoy the Mediterranean.
